The novel is set in the 1830's and 40's as Clive comes of age and chooses his profession and falls in love. Both Clive and Colonel Newcome are amiable and well-meaning. The rest of the family are more variable. Brian's daughter, Ethel is proud and beautiful and his son, Barnes is resentful and hectoring. Brian's mother-in-law the great Countess doesn't mince her words and his wife is more liberal. Hobson is a country man and his wife is strict about what their children read and do. Both Brian and Hobson, with their families, believe that the Colonel and his son Clive are somewhat beneath them.
